Mick's Mail

Kevin Kelley, Franklin Park, NJ: We spoke earlier in the season about the Cowboys defense and them not being at a Doomsday level at that point. With a team history-making performance this past weekend do you think we can be excited about this unit not only for the playoffs, but the immediate future? And can Doug Free finally get some credit for the way he kept us respectable while Big Marc is on the mend?

Mickey: Yes, you should absolutely be excited about the way this defense is playing, and not so much because of the shutouts, but because of how consistently they have played all season long. With the exception of the two games against the Giants, no team has scored more than 21 points against the Cowboys and 10 scored no more than 17 points, which normally is the NFL goal on defense – hold opponents to no more than 17 points and you give your team a chance to win. And you are right, this defense should be good for several years to come. As for Doug Free, he has earned the confidence of this coaching staff, to the point the coaches think he is capable of playing left tackle if need be. Not sure they trusted him when he first took over for Marc Colombo, but they certainly do now. Colombo, though, is expected to start Saturday night against the Eagles.
