Mike Newell, Carrollton, TX: It seems like every NFL draft the New England Patriots have an extra pick in the first and second rounds but the Cowboys with a worse won-loss record never seem to measure up. And now that the NFL lockout is over, we're $20 million over the cap and can't even grab free agents. What’s Jerry doing?
Mickey: And that is the exact reason it’s dangerous signing free agents who are in and around 30 years old. If they poop out on you, you’re caught holding the bag for the prorated signing bonus and that limits what you can do in free agency for at least two seasons. (See 2000-02.) Same thing. The Cowboys can sign free agents, but they just can’t load up and put all their eggs in one basket when they have so many other needs. Price you pay for cutting guys everyone has been clamoring for to get cut.
Jon Cakus, CA: When is Jerry going to put Drew Pearson in the Ring of Honor? And why hasn’t Jerry hung the Super Bowl banners up at Cowboys Stadium? (And I don't want to hear about "sight lines". There's plenty of space there!).
Mickey: OK, Jon, space yes, but where? Can’t put them on either side of the stadium because the video board would block out the banners for those on the opposite side. Put them at the end, and they would have to be huge, and likely would drop down too far, obstructing the views of the folks in the third level of those end zone sections. I mean, do you think there is some conspiracy going on here? Remember three of them were during his ownership. And as for Drew Pearson, his time just might be getting close.
Kevin Kelley, Franklin Park, NJ: I was just reading Rob and Josh`s assessment of Jay Ratliff`s 2010 campaign on DallasCowboys.com and for some reason, when his decrease in production is discussed there is always talk of his build, the elbows being scoped, being double teamed and what-not. But does anyone remember that he lost both his grandparents in an extremely tragic fire about halfway through the season and took only what amounted to maybe 2½ days to take care of his family before returning to attempt to help what was already a struggling defense try and turn its season around? I respect both Rob and Josh`s assessment but if you are going to tell a story, just make sure the entire story is being told.
Mickey: Knowing Jay, he would never use anything for an excuse, not surgically-repaired elbows or the death of his grandparents that indeed had a profound effect on him. Let me suggest something else, though: The loss of Marcus Spears and a sub-par season from Igor Olshansky. The Cowboys never gave offenses much to worry about with their front three, except for Ratliff. So if you are an offensive coordinator, what would you do? Focus on neutralizing Ratliff and take your chances with all the rest – Olshansky, Stephen Bowen and Jason Hatcher. You can’t always judge a player’s performance based on sacks.
