Anthony Abaya, Portsmouth, VA: Why does it seem the middle is always open in our defense? Why is it so hard for our defensive backs to get interceptions?

Mickey: In defense of Anthony, his question arrived before Monday night’s 21-7 victory over Carolina when the Cowboys cornerbacks collected two interceptions, the second returned by Terence Newman for a 27-yard touchdown. But his concern with the middle of the field still is valid since on the Panthers’ only touchdown drive they hit two big plays down the middle. In this case the Cowboys had switched to a sub package, playing just one safety, Ken Hamlin, in the middle of the field, and alternating between an extra defensive lineman and an extra defensive back. And with Hamlin seemingly cheating to Steve Smith’s side, the middle of the field was open for any receiver who could beat man coverage, and Panthers’ tight end Dante Rosario so did on consecutive plays. But at other times, the middle still is open and Hamlin just needs to do a better job of attacking those passes underneath.
