Mick's Mail

M. Kevin Kelley, Franklin Park, NJ: So give us all an assessment of our short-yardage problems for the playoffs. I know how explosive some of our other options can be but if I remember correctly, it’s still a game of inches, and those inches can become the difference between playoff glory or that guy from your local Morning News printing an off-season full of I-told-you-so`s – especially after his ill fated prediction of the sub-500 season both in the aforementioned local Morning News and a national media outlet with other "expert" opinions that amounted to horse poop!

Mickey: The short-yardage problems are baffling, especially since that is supposed to be what Marion Barber does, and supposedly this is an offensive line that will maul opponents. Supposedly. To me, when something doesn’t work for this long, sort of like your kicker missing field goals, it’s time to try something different. And to me, what could it hurt (except an ego) to insert Felix Jones or Tashard Choice into the backfield on those short-yardage situations? At least they give defenses something other than powering the ball between the tackles to worry about. Teams seem to be selling out, gambling the Cowboys will come right at them with Barber at tailback, and they are winning that gamble. By the way, the Redskins defense leads the league in fourth-down stops, opponents now converting just three of 16 attempts (19 percent) against them. But you are right, this needs to be fixed, because in the playoffs it seems all your warts get exposed.
